Alenka Nemec Svete graduated in 1995 from Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, in the field of chemical engineering. In February 1996, she started to work as a trainee at the Institute of Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana. During her training period, she was working in the Clinical Laboratory at the Clinic for Ruminants and Ambulatory Clinic (Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana), diagnostic laboratories at former University Institute of Gerontology, (Internal Clinic Trnovo, University Clinical Centre, Ljubljana) and diagnostic laboratories of the Bežigrad Community Health Centre (Ljubljana).
In October 1996, she was continuing education at postgraduate study at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana, within the Young Researchers programme, under the mentorship of Prof. Marinka Drobnič Košorok (Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana) and Prof. Borut Štrukelj (Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana). A part of her research work for PhD study was done at the Veterinary Faculty, Utrecht University (Netherlands), where she was working from September 2001 to March 2002. She completed her PhD studies in 2003.
Alenka Nemec Svete was employed at the Institute of Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Faculty (University of Ljubljana) from 1996 to 1999. At the same time and at the same faculty, she was working on establishment and development of Diagnostic Laboratory at the Clinic for Surgery and Small Animal Medicine, where she has been employed since May 1999. In addition to the routine work, she is also working on the research work within the P4 0053 research programme group.
In 2000, she was trained in diagnostic laboratories of Veterinary Faculty in Cambridge (The Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, Great Britain), and in 2000 and 2004 in diagnostic laboratories of Veterinary Faculty in Utrecht (Netherlands). Over the previous decade, she has been collaborating with veterinarians in the research projects investigating mostly oxidative stress in healthy and diseased animals.
Alenka Nemec Svete is the head of Clinical Laboratory and the head of the Quality Management System at the Clinic for Surgery and Small Animal Medicine (Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana). She is also the member of the Quality Assurance Commission and internal auditor of the Quality Management System at Veterinary Faculty.
In November 2014, Alenka Nemec Svete became an associate professor in the field of veterinary biochemistry. She is a mentor or co-mentor of undergraduate students of veterinary medicine that are involved in students’ research projects within the frame of the research projects for a Prešern Award.
She is also a mentor or co-mentor of postgraduate students who enroled the interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Biomedicine at the University of Ljubljana. She is author or co-author of numerous scientific and professional articles published in journals throughout the world. She is also a co-author of university textbook (“Clinical biochemistry in veterinary medicine”, Alenka Nemec Svete, Robert Frangež).
Alenka Nemec Svete is a member of the Slovenian Association for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine and Slovenian Biochemical Society.
